Is it Necessary to Upgrade to BS6 Engine this 2020?

The Indian automotive industry leapfrogged to BS6 emission norms from BS4, skipping the BS5. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, every new car sold in the country must have a BS 6 engine from April 1, 2020.

After the enforcement of the law, many car owners with lower emission complying vehicles have been wondering if they too need to upgrade to BS6-compliant cars. The answer is NO! They do not need to worry about the upgradation as the rule applies only to new cars. However, cars with lower emission standards might be banned at a later stage just like BS1 (India 2000) and BS2 cars in the past.

What is BS6 or BSVI?

In the year 2000, the Indian government felt the need to have its own emission norms to curb the growing automobile pollution. It introduced the Bharat Stage Emission Standard (BSES), commonly known as Bharat Stage, in the same year. Its regulations follow the European emission standards. Till now, five different emission standards have been introduced – India 2000, BS2, BS3, BS4 and the latest BS6. The BS5 regulation was skipped as the country was lagging way behind its European counterparts, and the skip was imperative.

Emission Standard Year of Introduction
BS 1 (India 2000) 2000
BS 2 2005
BS 3 2010
BS 4 2017
BS 6 2020

The BS6 engine cars follow a more stringent emission regulation, which limits the release of Nitrous Oxide (NO) and Particulate Matter (PM) in the air. It brings down the release to almost 80 per cent.

What about used cars?

Used Cars - BS4 to BS6 Engine

In the used car market, you get a lot of cars with engines complying with BS1 to BS4 emission norms. Recently, the BS badge has also gained popularity in the pre-owned vehicle space as cars with higher emission badge are valued higher compared to the lower ones.

In the future too, the BS6 cars will be better valued than a BS4-complying one. Even the financial institutions offering used car loan are taking note of the upgrade and sanctioning high-value loans for cars following higher BS standard.

Should you buy a pre-owned BS6 car?

If you find a BS6 pre-owned car to buy (which means it should not be older than four months), you should do so even if it means getting a second hand car loan. Why? The top reason is the condition of the car, which would be almost new; second, it complies with the latest norms. So, when you decide to sell a BS6-compliant car, you’ll get a better resale value than a BS4 or older models.

Environment care

By opting for BS6 engine cars, you choose to contribute to a cleaner environment. The latest emission norms ensure the curbing of pollutants to significantly low levels.

In a nutshell, while it is not compulsory to upgrade to a BS6 engine but, voluntarily you should, with the environment’s conservation on your mind. Moreover, you also get a better resale value for your vehicle.
