10 Steps to Get a Student Visa for USA: A Complete Guide

Joining the prestigious ivy league universities and colleges in the USA is a coveted dream of many. If you’re among the lucky ones who’ve managed to get admission at one, you will need a valid student visa before you can finally fly to the States.

There are three kinds of US study visas:

  • F-1 (academic and language students)
  • M-1 (non-academic/vocational students)
  • J-1 (exchange visitors)

To make things convenient for you, here is a step-by-step guide on how to get student visa for USA.

Step 1. Take admission in a US institution

Firstly, you must enrol in a US college/university or school. The institution you get admission into must have the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVP) approval.

Step 2. Get the DS-2019 or I-20 form from the institution

Your SEVP-approved college will provide you with a DS-2019 form (for J-1 students) or an I-20 form (for M-1 and F-1 students).

The form contains your college’s address, SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) ID and other important information about your programme. You will need it for your visa interview.

Step 3. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee

Now, you have to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee. The amount is $350 for F-1/M-1 applicants and $220 for J-1 applicants. Print out the confirmation page after payment as you need it during the visa interview.

Step 4. Locate a US consulate or embassy

You have to apply for an international student visa for USAthrough a US consulate or embassy. There are five of them in India, and it’s easy to find one online.

Step 5. Fill out the DS-160 form

Complete the form DS-160 through the CEPC (Consular Electronic Application Centre) online portal. After completing the Online Non-immigrant Visa Application, take a printout of the confirmation page.

Step 6. Schedule the visa interview

You can now consult the US consulate or embassy to schedule your interview and biometric appointment.

Step 7. Pay your visa application fee

You need to pay a visa application fee of $160, irrespective of your country. As evident, multiple visa-related charges can put pressure on your savings.

Thankfully, lenders like Tata Capital offer loans at attractive personal loan interest rates. So, you can get one to cover such expenses easily.

Step 8. Appear for your interview

Perhaps the most critical step is your visa interview. It broadly affects your chances of getting USA visa approval. On the day of your interview, you will have to carry all the essential documents, like passport, forms, visa application fee receipt, qualifications, etc.

You will answer some personal questions and fulfil all the biometric formalities. If you clear the interview, the embassy will keep your passport for stamping the visa.

Step 9. Submit the visa insurance fee

You may or may not be required to pay the insurance fee depending on your country’s agreement with the US.

Step 10. Get your USA student visa

After getting approval, you will receive your passport with the new visa. You can pick it up from the embassy or obtain it through the mail.
