How insidious is the Omicron variant?

The overall risk related to this new variant remains very high, and it is hard to predict exactly when will this pandemic endThe World Health Organisation (WHO) states that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is a variant of concern.

This report is based on the evidence that it has several mutations that may impact how it behaves. As per their research, Omicron is spreading significantly faster than the Delta variant, with a doubling time of 2-3 days.

When will Omicron end?

When a virus is spreading worldwide and leading to numerous infections, the chances of the virus mutating increase. In other words, the more opportunities a virus has to circulate, the more opportunities it has to undergo changes.

According to Indian epidemiologist Dr Giridhar Babu, the Omicron wave in India will last until the last week of January or early February. This is because Omicron typically takes three weeks to reach a peak, which is about thrice as faster than the Delta wave. According to infectious diseases specialist Dr Om Srivastava, this wave is expected to stabilise and decline by March 2022.

Another popular theory is the pandemic could translate into an endemic viral infection in 2022 and see localised and short peaks in small pockets of Delhi, Kerala and Chhattisgarh. Despite these predictions, you must always practice safety measures and caution.

How to protect yourself against Omicron

The advent of new variants like Delta and Omicron is a cause for health concerns. They remind us that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. Therefore, you must get the vaccine when available.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) repeatedly warns citizens to continue following existing advice on preventing the spread of the virus. These measures include:

  • Staying indoors, unless it is necessary to step out
  • Avoiding public places
  • Avoiding travel
