Benefits of Bharat Number Plate

Benefits of Bharat Number Plate

In India, the Motor Vehicles Act stipulates that when an individual moves to a new state, they must transfer the registration of their passenger vehicles to the new state within 12 months. Failing to comply with these regulations on time could lead to high penalties and fines.

This often makes moving to new cities and states a hassle, especially for those who frequently need to relocate for their jobs.  Transferring registrations is also time-consuming, making it challenging for those with demanding jobs.

The Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways (MoRTH) introduced the Bharat Series number plates in 2021 to combat these challenges.

The aim was to facilitate free movement and easier relocation within the country. There are several benefits of a Bharat number plate. This article will explore what a Bharat plate is, BH number plate benefits, eligibility criteria, and how to apply for one.

What is a Bharat Series Number Plate?

In India, vehicles have number plates indicating their registered state. When an individual relocates, their vehicles must be re-registered with that state. This process is time-consuming and challenging, especially for those with demanding jobs that require frequent relocation.

However, those applying for BH number plates do not receive state-specific registrations. Instead, they receive a “BH” number plate. This allows them to use their vehicles anywhere within the country without altering registrations.

The BH series number plate also comes with a different format. It begins with the year it was registered in (YY), followed by BH, a unique four-digit number, and single or double random alphabets. For example, if the year of registration were 2021, the format would be:

– Registration year: 21

– Bharat series code: BH

– Unique 4-digit number: A unique code assigned to the personal vehicle (e.g., 5262)

– Single or double alphabets: Random letters assigned to the personal vehicle

These number plates only apply to personal, non-transport vehicles and are valid nationwide.

Who is Eligible for a BH number plate?

While there are several benefits of a BH number plate, not everyone is eligible to apply for one.  Individuals must meet specific criteria to access the benefits of BH series registration. These include:

– Indian citizens who work for the state or central government

– Individuals who work for banks, the defence services, or Indian administrative services

– Private sector employees from companies with offices in at least four Indian states or Union Territories

– The vehicle must have a PUC certificate and road tax payments must be cleared

What are the Benefits of BH Series Number Plates?

There are several benefits of a Bharat number plate, including:

1. Reduced costs

Once your vehicles are registered, you must pay road taxes for the next 15 years. However, individuals with BH series plates only need to pay road tax for 2 years or in multiples of 2 years. This allows them to save money and budget expenses. NOCs and re-registration costs are also omitted since these processes are unnecessary for BH plates.

2. Countrywide validity

The most significant benefit of having a BH number plate is its countrywide validity. Unlike regular, state-specific number plates, individuals with the BH number plate do not need to change their registrations when relocating to a new state. This saves time and funds and is overall more convenient.

3. Safety

BH number plates are also considered safer. This is because they are more advanced, containing features like tracking chips, which make counterfeit plates less likely. Tracking and toll booths have also become more manageable. Due to its centralized registration, the risk of illegal registration transfers is also reduced.

4. Simplified processes

Another significant benefit of BH number plates is the quick and straightforward application process. The application portal can be accessed online, and minimal paperwork is required. Processing typically only takes two to three days, and BH series numbers are always easy to gauge, thanks to their simple format.

What are the Disadvantages of the BH Series Number Plate

1. Lack of coverage for transport vehicles

BH number plates can only be used for non-transport, private vehicles. Taxis, buses, and trucks cannot apply for them, reducing their coverage and availability.

2. Strict eligibility criteria

Eligibility is restricted to certain people, including government and defence employees and a small group of private employees.

How can you apply for a BH Series Number Plate?

The BH series number plate registration is a simple and efficient process. Individuals can apply online on the MORTH Vahan portal or from any authorized vehicle dealer. The steps to apply are:

– If you choose to do the registration via an automobile dealer, the dealer will have to fill in Form 20 on your behalf. Private sector workers must also submit Form 60 and their employment IDs.

– Individuals must then choose the “BH” type registration. Individuals must also submit their relevant documents and identification during this application step.

– The Regional Transport Office (RTO) then scrutinizes the application. During this step, it will either be approved or denied.

– Following approval, individuals must clear any required payments or MV taxes.

– After completing all steps, a BH series number will be generated.

Which Documents are Required to Apply for a BH Series Vehicle Number Plate Registration?

Individuals who want BH registrations need to keep certain documents handy. These documents are required for registration; keeping them ready will streamline the application process. Documents include:

– A Vehicle Registration Certificate

– Your road tax receipt

– A valid PUC certificate

– Identify proof (like your Adhaar card and passport)

– Address proof (like lease agreements, electricity bills, or water bills)

– Employment proof

– Form 60 or Form 20

Conclusion

Introducing the BH series number plate has made relocation significantly more convenient for countless people. Keeping your documents ready can also simplify and streamline the application process.
